Why staying away from your X may be healthy for you.

...Or how to avoid emotional vampires.

I am writing and conducting research for my doctorate. One of my first classes has discussion groups in which we answer/discuss topics of interest (first from the professor, then on which ever direction for effective communications we decide). This tangent was in reference to how to handle stress in the work environment, and to avoiding toxic people. This is my part of the discussion.

Levine's advice to start work early and leave on time, and of avoiding toxic people is always good advice. On a personal level, however; I found an interesting concept for making one's life easier over all, not just at work. According to Bernstein (2007) there are people who have become emotional vampires, that is, people that feed off of your reaction or response to them or who seem to need your emotions to validate their own. The following measures were suggested as a way of protecting yourself from emotional vampires;

1. Know them, know their history, and know your goal
The way to anticipate vampires is by knowing how they've acted in the past. Chances are pretty good that they'll do the same thing in the future. The big mistake you can make with vampires is assuming, without evidence, that though their record has been bad in the past, that they have learned their lesson, and will do better this time. When you deal with vampires, always ask yourself what you're trying to accomplish and why. If you're not sure, don't do anything until you've thought about it carefully.

2. Get outside verification
Vampires want you to listen to them alone. To control you, they'll try to isolate you from your usual sources of information. Always check out what they say with a trusted friend, especially when you'd rather not. Vampires can't operate in the light of day.

3. Do what they don't
To prevail over Emotional Vampires you must rush in where they fear to tread. Your greatest strengths lie in doing the things you can do that vampires can't.

4. Pay attention to actions, not words
What vampires say is often very different from what they do. To avoid being drained, always focus on what they do.

5. Identify hypnotic strategy
Vampires are consummate hypnotists. When you see through the smoke and mirrors, their illusions don't work nearly so well.

6. Pick your battles
To be an effective vampire fighter, you have to be able to pick the important battles and ignore the rest. You also have to avoid fighting battles you can't possibly win.

7. Let contingencies do the work
A contingency is an if-then situation. If someone does a particular thing, then certain consequences will follow. The only way Emotional Vampires learn anything is by experiencing the consequences of their own behavior. If you're ever tempted to rescue a vampire, think about what you're teaching him or her about how the game of life is played.

8. Choose your words as carefully as you pick your battles
With Emotional Vampires what you say, how you say it, and when you say it are all crucial to the outcomes you are likely to achieve.

9. Ignore tantrums
When vampires don't get their way, they throw tantrums. They can explode into all sorts of emotional outbursts whose only purpose is to get you to give in. Don't.

10. Know your own limits
Dealing with Emotional Vampires requires a lot of effort. They may be worth it, they may not. Only you can decide. Sometimes it's better to run away, or not get involved in the first place.

Though all of these suggestions are important, I find that the last one is the best. Knowing your limits is not only a way of rephrasing "avoid toxic people," but it is I think, better. There are toxic people in our lives that we cannot avoid. Our principal. Our unit director. Family members. How we learn to deal with them is a measure of our character.

One note of caution. There is a difference between a professional emotional vampire and those who are made so as a result of circumstance without which they would be normal people. When my wife began to isolate herself from me after the horrendous burden of raising two mentally retarded sons and the concurrent physical decline and death of her mother, she spiraled into the darkness of depression.

My reaction to her was in "emergency mode." In a way I became an emotional vampire in appearance, not in reality. As she drew farther and farther away (e.g. sleeping upstairs, acting unmarried, moving out of the house) my emergency mode became panic. I was losing the one person in my life I'd grown to trust intimately and deeply. I became a psuedo emotional vampire, and the more I tried to do what I thought I had to in order to draw her back to our marriage, the deeper into emotional vampirism I fell; though I have recovered I am now alone.

It is essential to learn to distinguish reality from appearance; they aren't always the same. We may be able to avoid toxic people, or emotional vampires we work with (I am a school teacher and I can by staying out of the lunchroom and eating in my classroom) but what if those toxic emotional vampires are a part of the life we live; as was suggested, boss, co-worker seen daily, spouse? Learn to apply these strategies without fault, but remember what Bernstein left unsaid, anger is your enemy. If the emotional vampire can make you angry or influence your emotions negatively, they've won and are feeding on you. Don't let them see you angry. Take a break. Go stress out somewhere else, but do not let them get to you.

I know this is NOT a politically correct suggestion, and that is all it is a suggestion (you have the legal option of a divorce if you wish). If the EV is a spouse, nothing justifies divorce except adultery. Prayer and meditation on the word, praise music and time alone to recharge are essential.

No my dear, I was not prepared at all to say the least. Not to complain. God is helping me when my heart ache too much. But U.S. Immigration did not apply their own law about a married couple - the proof is right here:

so they separated us for 19 months (that is very long and that was just after our honeymoon) and as soon as I Immigrated in the U.S. I was about to live the definitive separation. All we had together is 5 1/2 months and I am living with a constant "knife" in my heart since 6 months. We had our honeymoon and almost right after, Ashley was going Home.

I am sure death of a loved one is always a shock but in our situation, we had multiple shocks. And I am not talking about the VA hospital - even Congressman Ron Paul is saying this is a second class service and I definitively agree with him. So put the VA in the mix to top all of it off. Not to complain. It's a hard time.

Canada is worse. I won't even mention what happened.

All we had together is 5 1/2 months and if Congressman McHugh would not be involved, we would not see each other before his death and I would be thrown like a garbage bag in Canada on December 11th, one day before his funerals.

SO WE LOST 19 PRECIOUS MONTHS ON 24 1/2.
ON THE ALTAR OF THE POWER TRIP OF THE GUYS AT THE BORDERS WE DEALT WITH
ON NOV. 3RD, 2004.
ALL WE HAD IS 5 1/2 MONTHS TOGETHER. IF I WOULD BE WITH HIM FOR 24 1/2 MONTHS TO TAKE CARE OF HIM, HE MAY NOT BE DEAD TODAY !!

And now........my brother-in-law is actually dying.........liver problems too to make the things worse.....my hubby had liver problems also.......

.......CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE FOR BOTH.

The word asherah also refers to a wooden pole, or cult pillar, that stood at Canaanite places of worship-perhaps the trunk of a tree with the branches chopped off-and associated with the worship of the goddess Asherah.

Other pagan gods in addition to Baal and his companions were worshiped by the Canaanites. Molech was the national deity of the Ammonites (Leviticus 18:21; Jeremiah 32:35), whose worship was accompanied by the burning of children offered as a sacrifice by their own parents. The god Molech also appears in the Old Testament as Milcom (2 Kings 23:13; Zephaniah 1:5; Malcham, KJV) and in the New Testament as Moloch (Acts 7:43).


Leviticus 18:21

21 You shall not give any of your children to pass through the fire and sacrifice them to Molech [the fire god], nor shall you profane the name of your God [by giving it to false gods]. I am the Lord. AMP

Chemosh (Judges 11:24; 2 Kings 23:13) was the national god of the Moabites and Ammonites. This deity was apparently compounded with Athtar, the Venus star, and so is thought to be a pagan god associated with the heavenly bodies. Chemosh has been identified with Baal of Peor, Baal-Zebub, Mars, and Saturn, as the star of ill-omen. Dibon (Numbers 21:30), a town in Moab north of the River Arnon, was the chief seat of its worship.


Judges 11:24

24 Will you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? And all the Lord our God dispossessed before us, we will possess. AMP

2 Kings 23:13

Numbers 21:30

30 We have shot them down; Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon, and we have laid them waste as far as Nophah, which reaches to Medeba. AMP


Like Molech, Chemosh was worshiped by the sacrifice of children as burnt offerings, but scholars believe it is incorrect to identify Chemosh directly with Molech. Solomon sanctified Chemosh as a part of his tolerance of pagan gods (1 Kings 11:7), but Josiah abolished its worship (2 Kings 23:13). Human sacrifice was made to Chemosh, according to 2 Kings 3:27, which reports that Mesha, king of Moab, offered his eldest son as a burnt offering on the wall of Kir Hareseth, the ancient capital of Moab.


1 Kings 11:7

7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abominable idol of Moab, on the hill opposite Jerusalem, and for Molech the abominable idol of the Ammonites. AMP

2 Kings 23:13

Ashtoreth (1 Kings 11:5,33; 2 Kings 23:13) was the ancient Syrian and Phoenician goddess of the moon, sexuality, sensual love, and fertililty. In the Old Testament Ashtoreth is often associated with the worship of Baal. The KJV word Ashtaroth is the plural form of Ashtoreth; the NKJV has Ashtoreths (Judges 2:13; 1 Samuel 12:10; also see Ishtar above).


1 Kings 11:5

5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abominable idol of the Ammonites! [1 Kings 9:6-9.]

13 And they forsook the Lord and served Baal [the god worshiped by the Canaanites] and the Ashtaroth [female deities such as Ashtoreth and Asherah]. AMP

10 And they cried to the Lord, saying, We have sinned because we have forsaken the Lord and have served the Baals and the Ashtaroth; but now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve You. AMP


Remphan (Acts 7:43; Rephan, RSV, NIV, NEB; Rompha, NASB) was an idol worshiped by Israel in the wilderness. This may be the same pagan god as Chiun (Amos 5:26; Kiyyun, NASB; Kaiwan your star-god, RSV), or Saturn.


Acts 7:43

43 No, your real interest was in your pagan gods — the shrine of Molech, the star god Rephan, and the images you made to worship them. So I will send you into captivity far away in Babylon.' NLT

Amos 5:26

26[No] but [instead of bringing Me the appointed sacrifices] you carried about the tent of your king Sakkuth and Kaiwan [names for the gods of the planet Saturn], your images of your star-god which you made for yourselves [and you will do so again]. AMP


Nehushtan, literally "bronze serpent-idol," was the contemptuous name given by King Hezekiah to the bronze serpent made by Moses in the wilderness (Numbers 21:8-9), when people began to worship it (2 Kings 18:4).


Numbers 21:8-9

8 And the Lord said to Moses, Make a fiery serpent [of bronze] and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.

9 And Moses made a serpent of bronze and put it on a pole, and if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked to the serpent of bronze [attentively, expectantly, with a steady and absorbing gaze], he lived. AMP

2 Kings 18:4

4 He removed the pagan shrines, smashed the sacred pillars, and knocked down the Asherah poles. He broke up the bronze serpent that Moses had made, because the people of Israel had begun to worship it by burning incense to it. The bronze serpent was called Nehushtan. NLT

HOLY FIRE
Although the temperatures during the winter of 1939 were especially frigid, Carl and Catherine remember that year with special warmth.

As pastors of a very small church in northern Illinois, they lived in a drafty parsonage heated only by a coal stove. It was one thing for them to be chilly; it was quite another for their 6-month-old firstborn son.

This was the heart of the Great Depression, and the church paid only a small, token salary. And there simply wasn't enough money to supply their most basic needs.

Said Carl: "With our last fuel in the heating stove, we knelt in our devotional prayer time and asked God to provide us with some coal. As we prayed, the mailman's feet were heard crunching on the snow on our wooden porch."

After they finished with their prayer time, they collected their mail consisting of one letter.

Upon opening it, they read the following: We thought maybe you needed some money to keep the baby warm. Don't thank us. It's some of the Lord's money.

"We were greatly blessed and we still have the letter." said Carl. "We were reminded of the verse, `and it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear."� (Isaiah 65:24)

The baby is now a missionary.

We should always be quick to call upon the Lord and share with Him all that is on our heart. We must remember that God cares for us and He wishes for our Joy to be full. The Lord declares in Jeremiah 33:3 "Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not." Never believe the lie that you can do it all on your own because the simple truth is without God's help we can accomplish nothing.

Be encouraged to spend time with the Lord sharing with Him all that is on your heart and know that it is God's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. (Deuteronomy 8:16-19) (Luke 12:32) (John 16:23-24) (John 15:5-8) (Proverbs 8:17)

I got to read bites and pieces of your post on the
Truth of God's Wrod web group...and it tore my heart out.

You see my GrandFather came down in the 1920's or 1930's
and eventually took the test to naturalize....

he made sure to bring his four children back to
his home town in the North, almost every summer....
and most of the grandchildren too...but by the 1970's
he had passed onward, and then my mom moved me to
Florida, so we let his cabin rental go..and haven't
had much chance to go back since...

My family is still so grateful and friendly to Canada...
and it shocks me to hear of your suffering.
I would just like to send a hug and say a sincere
apology for the mistakes and the abuse that you have suffered.

I will pray that God can reach in and fix these trials and
troubles quickly...that he can work on the guard and
government hearts and open their eyes to the real situations
and real people that are being harassed.

I think in general, everyone is suffering.
I refuse to fly on an airplane...it's not worth the hassel
or headache...and I won't go to big sporting events anymore...
why, when you cannot bring in a cooler of soda or bottled water
(can't afford the stand prices...and tickets at the same time, winks.)

Life here in the grand ole USA isn't panning out like they dreamed.
Money means less and less these days, and even networking only
gets you so far. Right now, no one is cream...
we are all falling into that downward spiral...and the rich,
they are moving overseas to avoid taxes...winks.

I know that it's small comfort, but continue to fix your
eyes on the coming of the Lord...in that soon we will be
moved into a new place...a fair and fun and wonderful heaven...
a paradise where no one pushes from behind, steps on your toes,
and no one can harm you with words or actions, for nothing will
be hidden, and everyone will be content and well cared for.

Until we reach that place,
pray and do your best...that is all he asks of us...
cling to the music and the friends that make you joyful,
and do what you know is right...and just hang in there...
try to find forgiveness so that bitterness doesnt' steal
one drop od sunshine from your life.

Feeling Hopeful

Thinking of My Wife

The day I officially proposed marriage to a very dear woman named Marie Martine Hamel using this poem and she said yes making me the happiest man on planet Earth:)

She is the woman I have been searching for all my life. I had been praying and asking God for such a woman and He heard me. I had been talking to her for weeks before I realized she was the answer to my prayers. I thank God for her every day.

PROPOSAL

There are things I need to say,
I love you more each passing day.
Of all the things I could choose to do,
All I want is to be with you.

No more time spent all alone,
Just time together in our home.
For you are the greatest treasure,
I want us to be together.

There’s still more I want to say,
I want you near me every day.
