Our march toward genuine accountability for the Bush/Cheney Administration continues today as former Attorney General John Ashcroft testified before the House Judiciary Committee regarding this Administration's illegal use of torture.
 
The use of torture, abusive interrogation practices, and detainee abuse by this sordid Administration will go down in history as a permanent black mark against our nation.
 
Torturing prisoners is fundamentally un-American.  Torture is not only illegal under U.S. law and barred by the Geneva Convention, but it is immoral and actually hurts our national security and makes us less safe.
 
CONTRIBUTE
 
Today's hearing in the Judiciary Committee focused on mounting evidence that senior members of the Bush Administration specifically approved torture techniques outlawed by US and International law. This issue is directly relevant to the articles of impeachment introduced by Rep. Dennis Kucinich relating to torture, and today's hearing should add momentum to our campaign in favor of impeachment hearings.
 
During my questioning of Mr. Ashcroft, he refused to answer my repeated direct questions about the so-called "principals meetings" he took part in with Vice President Cheney, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, and Alberto Gonzales where these key officials reportedly approved detailed interrogations against specific prisoners that included torture techniques including water boarding. Despite the fact that much of this information is in the public record, Mr. Ashcroft stubbornly refused to answer my legitimate questions and instead decide to "keep faith" with the Bush Administration and keep secrets from the American people and the Congress of the United States.
 
At issue here is nothing less than the Rule of Law: 
The President does not have the authority to violate US law.
 
Let there be no mistake, we must not waver in our fight against terrorism, but we cannot allow this fight to be used as a means of undermining the most fundamental American civil liberties and human rights.
 
This Administration has seized every opportunity to use terrorist threats to scare the public and improperly consolidate power in the Executive. In turn, the public has watched as two centuries of constitutional protections are torn apart.  Our enemies across the world use brutal, monstrous tactics to scare us.  In response, Bush and Cheney illegally formulated their own American brand of brutality - including water boarding and infliction of physical pain that gives the impression of impending death. 
 
By torturing prisoners - the Administration has put us in even greater danger - as whatever information that is gained through past torture would likely be inadmissible and endanger the trials of those that we would otherwise want to keep detained.
 
We must stand against the illegal and outrageous actions of the Bush Administration – actions that definitely constitute high crimes.

I will continue to stand beside you as we force accountability for this White House.  Keep up your efforts and keep faith.

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Omar Khadr, the only western prisoner still held in the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, broke down and wept when questioned by Canadian interrogators and moaned "Kill me," video footage released on Tuesday shows.

Khadr, a Canadian, was arrested in Afghanistan in 2002 at the age of 15 and is charged with killing a U.S. medic. The secret video was taken in February 2003 and shows Khadr being grilled by officials from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service spy agency.

"Kill me," Khadr can clearly be heard moaning in a desperate voice as he holds his head in his hands.

Extracts of videos taken over four days of interrogation were released by Khadr's lawyers on Tuesday after a long battle with the Canadian government.

"It's the cry of a desperate young man. He expected the Canadian officials to take him home," said Dennis Edney, one of Khadr's lawyers.

The footage offers a rare glimpse into the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, facility, where the United States is holding about 265 prisoners in conditions severely criticized by human rights groups.

Khadr also tells the interrogators "You don't care about me," complains of poor medical treatment and removes his orange jumpsuit to show scars from the serious injuries he suffered during the firefight in Afghanistan in which the medic died.

Critics of Khadr's treatment say he is a child soldier who should be rehabilitated rather than punished. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has brushed off calls to intervene with Washington, saying Khadr faces serious charges.

Edney said his client has suffered "torture and abuse" at the hands of the Americans during his time in Guantanamo. Khadr has alleged U.S. interrogators repeatedly threatened to rape him or send him to another country to be raped.

Documents released earlier this month show U.S. authorities deprived Khadr of sleep ahead of a separate interview with an official from Canada's foreign ministry in 2004, moving him every three hours to make him more likely to talk.

"I am hoping that the Canadian people will put aside the issue of whether he is guilty or innocent ... (and) say 'This is disgraceful, we don't treat young children that way'," Edney told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

A Canadian judge ruled last month that Khadr has a right to see descriptions of interviews that the Canadians conducted with him, to help him prepare for his trial at Guantanamo.

The poor quality video shows Khadr at plain wooden table in an apparently windowless cell and also sitting on a sofa.

He wears an orange prison jumpsuit, and at times buries his head in his hands, or pulls at his hair.

"I lost my eyes, I lost my feet, everything," he says. "No, you still have your eyes and your feet are still at the end of your legs, you know," responds one Canadian official, telling the teenager to "relax a bit."

Wayne Marston of the left-leaning opposition New Democratic Party said it was "disgraceful" for Harper to say Canada had U.S. assurances that Khadr was being treated properly.

"It's time for the prime minister to bring this young man home," he told the CBC. Other nations, such as Britain and Australia, have successfully pressed for the repatriation of citizens imprisoned in Guantanamo.

OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper is playing fast with the facts when he says the Conservative government has "no real alternative" to the U.S. legal process in the Omar Khadr case, say the Canadian detainee's lawyers.

"This is a disingenuous comment from the prime minister," says Khadr's Canadian lawyer, Dennis Edney.

"The prime minister, through his cabinet members, particularly Mr. (Peter) MacKay, have long said that they have been assured that Omar Khadr was being well treated, when in fact the Canadian government well knew that was not the case," Edney said in a telephone interview from Edmonton.

The prime minister tried Thursday to distance his Conservative government from explosive new documents released by the Foreign Affairs Department.

The documents show Canadian officials knew in 2004 that the U.S. military was depriving the then-17-year-old Khadr of sleep for weeks to soften him up for interrogation.

Khadr is accused of killing an American soldier in Afghanistan. Khadr was 15 at the time of the alleged incident.

Speaking in Tokyo, where the prime minister met with Japan's emperor and prime minister, Harper said the previous Liberal government knew about Khadr's treatment in Guantanamo Bay, yet did nothing.

"The previous government took a whole range, all of the information, into account when they made the decision on how to proceed with the Khadr case several years ago," said Harper.

"Canada has sought assurances that Mr. Khadr, under our government, will be treated humanely. We are monitoring those legal processes very carefully."

Canadian police officials first gained access to Khadr in Guantanamo Bay in early 2003, more than six months after he was brought to the military prison camp.

Nearly two years later, a Foreign Affairs spokesman said officials had yet to gain consular or welfare access to Khadr, although Canadian authorities did have contact with him in 2003 and 2004 for "intelligence purposes."

In July 2007, a Canadian federal lawyer dismissed concerns about the continued interrogation of Khadr, arguing that investigators had gained useful information after questioning him. That was a year after the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York issued a scathing report detailing alleged abuses and torture of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, including Khadr.

Human-rights advocates, opposition politicians and Britain's top law societies have all urged the Harper Tories to take urgent action in securing Khadr's release.

They accuse the Conservatives of being two-faced by refusing to act on Khadr's behalf while decrying human-rights abuses in China and elsewhere.

"It boggles my mind that this prime minister is prepared to criticize China over human rights and is prepared to lambaste Mexico for the way its criminal justice system is applied to a Canadian," said Edney.

"But when you have a young Canadian who is in Guantanamo Bay whom Canadian courts have said has been abused and tortured, our government remains silent."

The latest revelations about Khadr's treatment while in U.S. custody should be the straw that breaks the Conservative government's insistence that it will not ask for Khadr's return, says Alex Neve of Amnesty International Canada.

"The fact that today's revelations don't automatically, finally, lead to the government's agreeing to seek his repatriation frankly defies belief," he said.

The prime minister could have Khadr released from Guantanamo Bay with a single phone call, says University of Ottawa law professor Amir Attaran.

"Without exception, every other leader of a Western country has got their citizens out of Guantanamo," Attaran said.

"What is being done to Omar Khadr right now rests squarely on the shoulders of Prime Minister Harper," added Navy Lt.-Cmdr. William Kuebler, Khadr's U.S. military attorney.

Kuebler accused the Canadian government of knowingly hiding behind false U.S. assurances regarding Khadr's treatment in allowing him to be detained in Cuba.

Videotaped interviews with Khadr are expected to come out by next week, the contents of which Kuebler predicted would be "quite powerful."

Toronto-born Khadr, the son of an alleged al-Qaida financier, was captured in 2002 after a firefight with U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Designated an illegal combatant by U.S. authorities, Khadr is scheduled to go on trial for murder before a U.S. military court in October. He's accused of having lobbed a grenade that killed a U.S. Special Forces soldier.

The Americans say they plan to prosecute about 80 of the roughly 270 detainees held at Guantanamo on suspicion of terrorism or links to al-Qaida or the Taliban, but so far none of the cases has gone to trial.

A Canadian Federal Court judge ruled last month that Khadr's treatment at the hands of the U.S. military violated international laws against torture, but did not disclose details.

The United Nations has also raised concerns about the international precedent being set by trying Khadr for war crimes allegedly committed when he was a child.

The Foreign Affairs Department reports say Canadian official Jim Gould visited Khadr in 2004 at Guantanamo. While there, Gould was briefed by the U.S. military on Khadr's treatment.

One of the reports says Khadr was purposely deprived of sleep and moved every three hours for 21 days to make him more pliable for interrogation.

An additional report in February 2003 from the U.S. Air Force noted that Khadr had not received any mail from his family in Canada since he was detained.

When the U.S. military finally relented and gave him a letter from his grandmother, agents watching on video camera and through one-way glass saw tears streaming down his cheeks as he read her words.

"Tears were coming from his eyes and he was rubbing his eyes and nose," the report says.

The air force report also notes that Arab inmates at the base picked on Khadr after interviews with investigators.

Foreign Affairs' head of foreign intelligence described Khadr in one report as a "screwed up" young man.

"All those persons who have been in positions of authority over him have abused him and his trust for their own purposes," wrote Scott Heatherington.

The officials who wrote the report, but did not formally object to Khadr's treatment, should be prosecuted under Canada's Criminal Code, said Attaran.

"Canadian officials at Foreign Affairs appear to have been complicit in the torture," he said.

"And there's no doubt in my mind that they're guilty of aiding and abetting torture, criminally . . . . It is a criminal offence."

I just spent three minutes reading your blog...that was enough.  Would you like someone to give you a ride out of my country???  I have talked to some friends and several volunteered.  However, mandatory microchip implantation is in effect. (You obviously have no clue the benefits of this especially in our military...no more POW's or MIA's)  We sure wouldn't want you to sneak back across the border.

Reserve Bank, faces a general investigation by the International
Monetary Fund. Just one more example of the Fed losing its power.


The United States Federal Reserve Bank, or Fed, seems as much a part
of America as Coca-Cola or Pizza Hut. But at least one difference has
become apparent in recent days. While the pizza chain and soft-drink
maker are likely to expand their scope of influence in the age of
globalization, the US central bank is finding that its power is
shrinking.

No Fed chief in US history has been forced to submit to the kind of humiliation that Ben Bernanke is facing.
This is partly down to circumstances. Inflation is going up and up,
and this year's average will likely top 4 percent. But this time Mr.
Dollar is also Mr. Powerless. He can raise interest rates in the fall,
or he can pray, which would probably be the better choice. At least
prayer would not prevent the US economy from growing, a highly likely
outcome if interest rates go up.
After years of growth, the United States is now on the brink of a
recession, one that is more likely to be deepened than softened by a
tight money policy. Investments will automatically become more
expensive, consumer spending will be curbed and economic growth will
slow down, immediately affecting unemployment figures and wages.

The textbook conclusion is that this will stabilize the value of money,
because no one will dare demand higher wages or higher prices. But the
macroeconomics textbooks are no longer worth much in the age of
globalization. Modern inflation is driven by the global scarcity of
resources. Nowadays purchasing power exceeds purchasing opportunity.
Most of all, there is not enough oil, and too few raw materials and
food products. These increasingly scarce resources are becoming the
focus of disputes among many people and billions of dollars are at
stake.
This is why the price of a barrel of crude oil (159 liters) has
increased from $25 (¤16) in 2002 to $135 (¤87) in 2008. And it is also
why the price of corn has tripled in the same time period, while that
of copper has almost quintupled.
If the inflation introduced in the United States is excluded, a
small miracle is revealed, namely something approaching price
stability. Adjusted for inflation, prices are in fact rising by only
2.3 percent. If this were the extent of it, the Fed chief could simply
blink like an old watchdog and go back to sleep. Instead, he is barking
loudly, which is his job. But he has lost his bite, because the Fed's
interest rate policy can do nothing about the scarcity of goods.

Embarrassing Investigation

Some of Bernanke's personal adversaries are also contributing
significantly to his current humiliation. In the past, the chairman of
the Federal Reserve was a pope among the priests of the financial
elite. But unlike his predecessor Alan Greenspan, Bernanke is finding
that his policies are not universally accepted, even within the Fed.
The last seven decisions reached by the Federal Open Market
Committee, which sets monetary policy, were accompanied by a growing
number of dissenting votes. Bernanke's critics say that with his policy
of cheap money -- in other words, recurring rate reductions -- he in
fact helped fuel the inflation problem he is now trying to combat.
Another problem for Mr. Dollar is that it will be several months
before his actions take effect. Officials with the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) have informed Bernanke about a plan that would have
been unheard-of in the past: a general examination of the US financial
system. The IMF's board of directors has ruled that a so-called
Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP) is to be carried out in the
United States. It is nothing less than an X-ray of the entire US
financial system.
As part of the assessment, the Fed, the Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC), the major investment banks, mortgage banks and hedge
funds will be asked to hand over confidential documents to the IMF
team. They will be required to answer the questions they are asked
during interviews. Their databases will be subjected to so-called
stress tests -- worst-case scenarios designed to simulate the broader
effects of failures of other major financial institutions or a
continuing decline of the dollar.

Under its bylaws, the IMF is charged with the supervision of the
international monetary system. Roughly two-thirds of IMF members -- but
never the United States -- have already endured this painful procedure.
For seven years, US President George W. Bush refused to allow the
IMF to conduct its assessment. Even now, he has only given the IMF
board his consent under one important condition. The review can begin
in Bush's last year in office, but it may not be completed until he has
left the White House. This is bad news for the Fed chairman.
When the final report on the risks of the US financial system is
released in 2010 -- and it is likely to cause a stir internationally --
only one of the people in positions of responsiblity today will still
be in office: Ben Bernanke.
